Authorities of the University of Benin have poured encomiums on the management of the Industrial and General Insurance (IGI) Plc and its sister company, Global Trust Savings and Loans Limiited, for their generous donations towards the success of the just-concluded 23rd Nigerian University Games (NUGA) hosted recently by the institution.
In a message of gratitude signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. O. G. Oshodin, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Staff and students, the university thanked all individual and corporate donors, noting that "their contributions had helped in no small measure in ensuring that the University of Benin successfully hosted the 23rd NUGA Games."
IGI, leading insurance company and a major sponsor of the sporting event, supported with a package worth N30,000,000. The sponsorship package includes N24 million Group Personal Accident insurance cover of all NUGA participating athletes and officials, N1 million cash donation to UNIBEN and the kitting of the school's contingent in select sports, namely athletics, football, handball, swimming, hockey, volleyball, table tennis and lawn tennis.
Executive Vice-Chairman of IGI, Mr Remi Olowude, while unveiling the sponsorship package shortly before the Games, had reiterated the company's commitment to rekindling the true spirit of sportsmanship and fostering national unity through interaction among students of tertiary institutions.
IGI was the official insurer of the previous NUGA Games hosted by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2009. It is also the official insurer of the national football teams and the Nigeria Premier League.
